Chapter 3: Public Proof

Kael wins his public ranking match against Rook Vale, shedding his zero-tier status and earning a 'Contender' rank. The victory triggers an immediate Tower floor reconfiguration, forcing Kael to flee into a hidden maintenance route identified by Sera. He ends the chapter as a marked man, now officially under Director Vane's oversight, but with a lead on a high-grade fuel cache that could sustain his ascent.

Public Proof

At 08:17, the gate rotation began to bite.

Kael felt the floor shudder through the Marauder’s chassis—a deep, grinding vibration that signaled the Tower’s locking teeth cycling into place. His right shoulder actuator, jury-rigged in the maintenance shafts, groaned under the strain. The fuel counter sat at 4.9%, a static, mocking reminder that his survival was now measured in milliliters of high-grade propellant.

He emerged into the arena. The air tasted of ozone and scorched steel. Above, the Spire observation deck glowed, housing the elites who treated the proving grounds like a stock ticker. The public boards hung overhead, projecting his status in cold, white light:

KAELEN VOSS OVERSIGHT FLAG: ACTIVE RATIO: 1.4x ASSET STATUS: PROVISIONAL

"Match entry confirmed," the marshal’s voice boomed. "Provisional contender, zero-tier no longer applicable."

Across the ring, Rook Vale’s mech glided into position. It was a pristine, high-torque frame, funded by the same institutional coffers that wanted Kael erased.

"You should have stayed in the shafts, Voss," Rook’s voice crackled over the net, smooth and bored. "Cleaner death. Less embarrassment."

Kael didn't reply. He shifted the Marauder, forcing Rook to compensate. The damaged shoulder screamed, white-hot pain lancing through Kael’s side, but he ignored it. He needed the angle.

He triggered the black-box core. The world sharpened. The core dumped a desperate, jagged surge of power into the frame, and the Marauder lunged. It was an ugly, crooked movement, but it carried him under Rook’s cannon sweep. The shot tore the floor plating behind him, showering the arena in sparks.

Kael felt the cost instantly. The actuator flared red on his display. Structural integrity dropped. Fuel consumption spiked.

Visible gain. Visible cost.

Rook pressed the attack, his rhythm precise and suffocating. He tried to pin Kael against the ring wall, but Kael waited for the fraction of a second between Rook’s adjustments—the micro-pause of a pilot who assumed he was already winning.

Kael drove the Marauder into that seam. The frame bucked, the black-box core screaming as it pushed the damaged actuators past their limit. He slammed into Rook’s side, metal biting into metal, and twisted. A sickening snap echoed through the arena. Rook’s stabilizer buckled.

"DAMAGE REGISTERED," the board flashed. "RECOVERY WINDOW OPEN."

Kael didn't hesitate. He dismantled the match with brutal, efficient violence. He forced Rook into an overcorrection, then shoved him into a raised floor seam. With one final, grinding burst, he sent Rook’s mech to its knee.

Across the floor, the scoreboard chimed. The 'ZERO-TIER' tag vanished, replaced by a hard, public 'CONTENDER' status. The arena went silent, then erupted in a ripple of shock.

"Interesting," Director Vane’s voice drifted from the deck, cold and measured.

Then, the Tower lurched. The lights shifted to a harsh, warning amber.

NEW FLOOR CONFIGURATION INITIATING. OLD ROUTE: CLOSED.

Sera’s voice cut through his comms, sharp as a blade. "Move. Now. The Tower is killing the old lane. If you don't hit the maintenance seam before the seal cycle finishes, you're dead."

Kael didn't look back. He dropped the Marauder into the service spillway just as the arena floor groaned and began to fold. Sera stood by the ladder, a route slate in her hand.

"There's a hidden law under this floor," she said, slapping the slate against the wall. Blue lines mapped a path through the guts of the Tower. "It’s a forgotten utility duct. If we hit it before the seal, the system honors the reward tier. If not, you’re paying the new rate to survive."

Kael memorized the path. Vane’s voice echoed from above: "Contender Voss is to present for review immediately. Oversight protocols will be enforced."

Kael climbed. The hidden lane was a furnace of heat and friction. The Marauder scraped against the walls, the black-box core hungry for the stress, feeding on the damage. He reached the maintenance seam just as the official access lane slammed shut with a sound like a vault door.

He was out. He was ranked. And he was a target.

Sera pointed toward a faded glyph on the map. "Restricted cache bay. High-grade fuel. It’s the only way you survive the next rotation."

Kael looked at the route ahead. The Tower was shifting, the ladder was widening, and he was no longer a ghost in the machine. He was a problem they couldn't ignore.
