Chapter 8

The transfer notice hit Mara’s phone like a physical blow, a cold, hard text message from Adrian Sloane’s office. IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED: Estate Management Directive 7-A. Pending Asset Reallocation. Effective 06:05:12. Below it, a countdown timer, stark red, already ticking: 05:59:48. Six minutes had evaporated while she’d been wrestling the encrypted data stick from Studio B’s sound-mixing room panel, her fingers raw from prying the stubborn cover. Six minutes Adrian had already accounted for.

Simultaneously, the estate’s internal network, usually a silent hum in her periphery, flared. Screens embedded in the service corridor walls, previously displaying hushed security feeds, now mirrored the directive. Access Revoked: Mara Vale. Unauthorized Presence Detected. All Sector B-7 Access Points Compromised. Initiating Lockdown Protocol: 00:00:30. A synthetic voice, flat and unyielding, echoed through the empty hall, each syllable a hammer blow against the concrete. “Security breach detected. All unauthorized personnel, vacate immediately.”

The thirty-second timer pulsed, a direct, undeniable threat. Mara didn’t need the voice to tell her. The heavy steel door to the service spine, her only route deeper into the wall cavity behind Studio B, began to slide shut, a grinding groan of metal on metal that vibrated through the floor. Adrian wasn’t just cutting off her access; he was actively trapping her, sealing her inside the very system she was trying to expose.

Her fingers, still stinging, fumbled for the data stick she’d retrieved—the “second copy” Tessa had mentioned, a master key for maintenance overrides, a desperate gamble. She jammed it into a forgotten utility panel beside the closing door, its dusty port barely visible beneath a tangle of old wiring. The panel’s screen flickered, a cascade of green code replacing the red lockdown warning. Maintenance Override: Sector B-7. Temporary Access Granted: 00:00:15. The door’s grinding halt was almost imperceptible, just a whisper of silence before it reversed, sliding open a fraction of an inch, enough to offer a sliver of escape.

Mara squeezed through the gap, her shoulder scraping against the cold steel, the data stick still humming in the panel, its temporary override a ticking fuse. She was in. But the cost was immediate, precise. Her phone buzzed again, Adrian’s office. Notice: Breach of Access Protocol. Legal Action Pending. Asset Reallocation Accelerated: 05:45:0
