Chapter 6

The Chen home felt hollowed out. Drawers hung like broken tongues, and the floor was a confetti of shredded correspondence—bills, letters, and ledgers that meant nothing to the intruders. Kai stood in the center, boots crunching on the debris. Aunt Mei sat in the only upright chair, her face a mask of brittle indifference.

“They weren't looking for money, Mei,” Kai said, his voice tight. He picked up a splintered wooden box from the floor. It was the housing for the authentication seal—the missing piece for his audit. It was empty. “They knew exactly where to find it.”

Mei’s gaze flickered to the window, watching the shadows of Chinatown deepen. “The seal is a key to the foundation of this district. If Julian gets it, he doesn't just clear his debt—he erases the history of everyone who relied on us.”

“Where is it?”

“In the Ancestral Archive. Under the Hall. But the protocol requires more than a key now. It requires a blood price. A public admission of the ledger’s origin.”

Kai felt the weight of his own history—the tuition, the life he’d built on the back of this debt—settle into his bones. He wasn't the outsider anymore. He was the architect of his own destruction.
