Chapter 6

The Audit Chamber smelled of ozone and sterile, recycled mana—the scent of a system preparing to delete a file. Kaelen stood before the dais, his fingers white-knuckled against his ledger. Beneath his tunic, his meridians thrummed with the jagged heat of the Rank-Suppression agent he’d forced into his cycle. It was a volatile fuel, but his only leverage against the Academy’s crushing gravity.

Elder Sola didn’t look up from his desk. A red notification pulse bathed his face in a warning hue. "You possess a remarkable talent for surviving, Kaelen," Sola said, his voice devoid of warmth. He swiped a hand through the air, expanding a list that scrolled rapidly down the wall. "Most students, when faced with an audit of your caliber, simply collapse. Their meridians shatter. But you? You use the pressure as a catalyst."

Kaelen kept his expression neutral, though his heart hammered against his ribs. "I adapt, Elder. Efficiency is the core of the curriculum, isn't it?"

Sola looked up, his gaze pinning Kaelen like a specimen. "Efficiency is a means to an end. Your recent energy spike at the treasury, the anomalous draw on the regional node... the system has flagged you for reclamation. You are no longer a student, Kaelen. You are a resource leak."

A notification chimed in Kaelen’s mind: Reclamation Protocol: 48 Hours. The system was calculating the exact moment his meridians would fail.

Kaelen left the chamber and headed for the Marketplace. Vane stood by the stabilizer exchange, flanked by enforcers, twirling a golden access token—a high-clearance key to the restricted archives—with effortless arrogance.

"The purge list is a thirsty thing, Kaelen," Vane said, his voice carrying over the crowd. "I’ve bought up every stabilizer in the sector. By the time the next ranking cycle locks, your meridians will be nothing but calcified glass."

Kaelen stepped into the crowd, brushing against Vane’s sleeve—a calculated stumble. As he pulled away, the obsidian weight of the override signature tucked into his palm. Vane continued gloating, unaware his most potent weapon was gone.

Kaelen vanished into the lower levels, reaching the Forbidden Archive. He jammed the stolen override into the pedestal. The system spiked, a surge of razor-sharp energy lashing out to drain his meridians. Kaelen gritted his teeth, feeding the security system a fabricated history of his own cultivation via the ledger. The gold light flickered, turned a sickly violet, and retreated. He found the record: the 'Rigged Ladder,' proving the purge was designed to consolidate wealth for the elite.

He went straight to Sola’s private study, dropping the ledger onto the mahogany desk. "I found the missing pages, Elder. I know why the treasury nodes are being throttled. It isn’t efficiency. It’s institutional theft, and you’re the one managing the books."

Sola’s eyes turned to cold flint. "The Academy is a machine, boy. Machines require fuel. You are the fat we trim."

"Then trim me, and I release this to the audit board," Kaelen countered. "Or, you give me a pass into the restricted archives. I want the research on the central power node."

Sola stared at him for a long, suffocating minute, then slid a glowing pass across the desk. "You have your access. But the purge list remains active. By tomorrow, the system will ensure you never reach the next tier."
