Chapter 6: The Price of Visibility

Kaelen uses a high-cost humanity sacrifice to bypass a locked gate, publicly securing his Iron-IV rank-up while Elara Thorne weaponizes the Tower's bounty system against him. He survives the transition to the void between floors, only to encounter a mysterious, corrupted memory fragment within the system itself.

The Price of Visibility

Kaelen Vance had seven minutes and fifty-two seconds left to live, and half the Transit Plaza wanted him dead before the timer hit seven.

His face hung above the concourse on twelve fractured holographic panes, bright enough to wash the grime off the walls and cruel enough to make the slums look even smaller. The elite broadcast frame was clean, white-gold, and effortless—Spire branding for the people who lived high enough to pretend the Tower was polished steel instead of a meat grinder.

TARGET: PROTOTYPE CORE-0 STATUS: SYSTEM VIRUS REWARD: PERMANENT TIER-UP TO SILVER-I ISSUED BY AUTHORITY OF E. THORNE

Below the notice, a smaller line pulsed in red: ASSISTANCE TO FLAGGED ANOMALY WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DE-RANKING.

Kael saw the crowd read it. He saw the math happen in their eyes. Not hatred—hunger. The kind born from ration debt and the desperate need to climb before the next rotation recycled them into scrap.

A scavenger with a welded jawguard pointed a shaking finger. "There. That's him."

Kael didn't wait. He turned and ran, his boots hammering against the sleek, artificial bridges of the Transit Plaza. The system flickered, unstable from the recent rewrite.

IRON-IV | HUMANITY: 84% | LIFE-TIMER: 07:52

A structural tremor rolled through the floor. The Tower was reconfiguring. The old transit lane was narrowing toward a seal, and the next transition would lock before he could reach it unless he found a non-standard route.

His system highlighted a maintenance seam behind a broken ad strip. Kael hit the release, but the interface stalled.

SUB-GRID MAINTENANCE PATH DETECTED. VALIDATION REQUIREMENT: HUMANITY TAX.

Behind him, the mob crashed into the pillar he’d just vacated. Someone shouted the bounty amount like a prayer. Kael didn't hesitate. He fed the interface a pulse of perception, overclocking his vision until the world sharpened into brutal geometry: blind spots, conduit heat, and the hairline catch of the hidden panel.

He ripped the metal open and dropped into the duct. The hatch slammed shut, muffling the roar of the mob. He was in the dark, jammed against rusted pipes.

ROUTE CALCULATION REQUIRES HUMANITY TAX. PAYMENT ACCEPTED: MEMORY FRAGMENT.

Kael pressed his thumb against the seam. "Give me the route."

A memory surfaced: a kitchen in the lower district, his mother’s hand over a chipped bowl, the smell of spice he couldn’t name. For one devastating second, he had the moment. Then the System shaved it away, turning his life into a spare part for his survival.

PAYMENT RECEIVED. ROUTE UNLOCKED.

The wall reoriented. Kael crawled through the narrow channel, skinning his shoulders raw, until he reached a grated maintenance throat overlooking the Floor 3 transition gate.

Elara Thorne’s image hung above the chamber, her voice riding the projection with icy precision. "Prototype Core-0. You keep forcing the Tower to waste attention on you. Anyone who slows him down will be recognized. Anyone who helps him will be de-ranked."

She had weaponized the social layer. The crowd below the gate surged toward the lifts, their fear of de-ranking overriding their greed for the bounty. The gate shutters began to grind shut.

Kael dropped from the grate. He landed at the terminal, his hand moving with desperate speed.

HIGH-SECURITY LOCKDOWN. ACCESS REQUIRES AUTHORIZED RANK OR ACTIVE SUPPRESSION EVENT.

He didn't have the rank. He had the bounty. He yanked the terminal’s signal spine free and slammed it against the gate rail. The chamber convulsed. The gate’s security loop, flooded by the bounty sensors tracking his every move, tried to correct the interference. Kael was turning Elara’s broadcast into a weapon.

FEEDBACK LOOP DETECTED. RANK EVENT IN PROGRESS.

The lock shattered. The gate screamed open.

IRON-IV CONFIRMED. PROGRESSION VALIDATED: PUBLICLY REGISTERED.

STAT BOOST: +6 AGILITY, +4 PERCEPTION, +8 STAMINA. PENALTY APPLIED: MAX HEALTH -12.

A deep, sick absence opened under his ribs. The gain was real, but the cost was a permanent reduction in his structural integrity. He stumbled through the gate as the chamber behind him erupted in chaos. The transition void swallowed him in cold, pressureless dark.

LIFE-TIMER: 07:39.

The interface was quiet, but the silence felt predatory. It was rewriting his status, optimizing him for a path he hadn't chosen. Ahead, a flicker moved through the void—a human outline suspended in the data stream, face half-erased by corruption. A ghost in the system memory.

Above, Elara’s voice cut through the Spire, shaking the channel open: "By order of the elite faction, Kaelen Vance is now worth a sector-wide bounty."

The ghost in the memory opened its mouth to speak.
