The Crystal Pavilion chandeliers still cast their hard, fractured light when Elena Voss’s phone buzzed against her palm. She stood at the base of the grand staircase—the exact spot where Alexander had slid his arm around her an hour earlier and turned every lens in the room toward them. #ValeVossCovenant was climbing faster than the auction bids. The screen now showed St. Aldric Academy.
“Ms. Voss, Meredith from admissions. The board refuses to wait until morning. Leo’s enrollment is suspended effective immediately unless we receive complete guardianship documentation by midnight. No extensions.”
Elena’s stomach tightened. The flash drive in her clutch felt suddenly heavier than the entire evening. Around her the gala continued its glittering churn—laughter sharp as broken glass, crystal clinking like countdowns. Leo’s name already drifted between silk and tuxedos, fed by Margot Hale’s latest montage leak. One more hour and the rumor would calcify into accepted truth.
Alexander materialized at her side, voice low and steady. “Whatever they demand, we deliver it on our schedule.”
